TIB for independent body to stop corrupt NGOs: Many NGOs involved in corruption, though condition of service recipients did not change, changes in NGO founders’ condition are notic

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) demanded an independent NGO Commission to ensure transparency and accountability in the NGO sector as many NGOs got involved in corruption and institutional irregularities due to lack of proper monitoring.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) made the suggestion in its research report titled `Problem of Good Governance in NGO Sector: The Ways to overcome'.

TIB organised a roundtable at the CIRDAP auditorium to disclose its report yesterday.

TIB chairman Prof. Dr Muzaffer Ahmad presided over the meeting while its executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman conducted it TIB research official Sadhan Kumar Das presented the report

The TIB report observed that the NGOs were formed after the liberation war of Bangladesh with the aim to meet humane demands, but now many NGOs got involved in corruption and irregularities reneging from their ideology.

"Though the condition of the service-recipients did not change, changes in socioeconomic condition of the NGO founders are recognisable," it said.

Former Adviser to the Caretaker Government M Hafizuddin, Dhaka University Professors Shalauddin M Aminuzzaman, Dr Samad, Dr Sahdhin Malik, former lawmaker Asaduzzaman Nur, NGO Affairs Bureau's representative M Alauddin, among others, addressed the meeting.

The speakers underscored the need for coordinating laws to coordinate between the national activities by the Government and the NGO sector, the second largest sector in the country.

They also stressed the need to increase the manpower and logistic support of the NGO Affairs Bureau till formation of separate commission. Criticising the manpower of the bureau they said it began with 67 official and employees in 1990, but its manpower dropped off on 60 now, though the number of NGO has increased.

The speakers said without monitoring on the micro credits by the NGO, the project would not be implemented and poverty would not be alleviated. The NGOs should take initiative to enhance the employment and monitor, he added.
